Today:
Don’t forget your raincoats and umbrellas, Terps! Expect steady rain throughout the day, with potential thunderstorms developing in the afternoon. Winds will be in the 15 to 20 mph range, while gusts could be as high as 40 mph. Temperatures will start off in the mid 50s, and reach the low 60s in the afternoon. Early evening temperatures will stay warm, ranging in the high 50s.
Tonight:
As the storm continues to make its way through the area, expect the rainy weather to follow us into the night. Temperatures will be in the low 40s, with winds ranging from 5 to 10 mph.
Thursday:
The rain will clear out of our area and make way for partly sunny conditions, with winds staying in the 10 to 15 mph. Similar to today, wind gusts could be in the 40 mph range. Morning temperatures start in the high 30s, climbing to the high 50s to low 60s come afternoon.
Looking Ahead:
High temperatures will stay in the 50s throughout the rest of the week. Similarly, clear conditions starting Thursday will continue into the weekend.
Discussion:
The stand-out weather event of this week is the massive low pressure system and strong cold front that is making its way through the eastern U.S. The Storm Prediction Center gave our area a slight risk of severe thunderstorms on their Day 2 Convective Outlook, which means that there is a possibility for scattered severe thunderstorms. Along with the low pressure system bringing rain to us this morning, a follow-up low pressure system will enter the region later, explaining the second round of rain we will see this evening. The low-level jet, a fast stream of air in the lower atmosphere, and moist, warm air advection will combine to create a moist, unstable environment, which is the perfect setup for convection and thunderstorms.

This is the Storm Prediction Center’s Day 2 Convective Outlook updated yesterday afternoon. Our area is highlighted in yellow, indicating that we are at a slight risk for severe thunderstorms today.
That’s all for today, have a great day Terps!
