Morning Update: Rain Today Makes Way for a Not-so-Spooky Halloween!

Today:

This morning, we are starting off on the warmer side with temperatures in the high 50s. Later on, temperatures will reach a high in the upper 60s before dropping into the lower 50s by the early evening. Winds will be from 10 to 15 mph, with the possibility of gusts over 20 mph! Expect rainy conditions throughout the day, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, which will taper off by the late afternoon.

Tonight:

The rain from earlier today will move out of our region, giving way to clearing conditions. Winds will maintain the 10 to 15 mph range.

Friday:

There is nothing scary about this Halloween’s weather! Temperatures in the low 50s will kick off our day. The daytime high will be around 60 degrees, which will drop back into the mid-50s later on. Winds will be on the breezier side, ranging from 15 to 20 mph with gusts over 30 mph. Despite the breezy weather, the pleasant fall temperatures combined with clear skies will make for a lovely Terp Carnival and Halloween!

Looking Ahead:

Weekend temperatures will stay in the low 60s range. Partly cloudy conditions will persist, with winds getting increasingly calmer as the weekend progresses. If you are planning to go to the homecoming football game this Saturday afternoon, we have beautiful conditions in store for us!

Discussion:

A massive low-pressure system is working its way throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast U.S. This system is responsible for the rain we are seeing today! When considering the synoptic-scale processes influencing what we are seeing, the jet stream, or a “stream” of fast-moving air in the upper troposphere, is a great start. Dips in the jet stream are called troughs, which typically are associated with precipitation. Upper-level divergence (spreading out) of winds is balanced out by lower-level converging (joining) winds east of the trough. With lower-level convergence, we have the low-pressure system responsible for the rainy weather. Since we are located in this region, this helps in explaining why we are getting such rainy weather today!

The yellow circle indicates the region east of the trough, which happens to be located over our area!

That’s all for today. Have a great day, Terps!
