Morning Update: Sunny and Breezy Seem to Be The Common Theme!

Today:

Expect a sunny and breezy day! Morning temperatures will start in the mid to high 30s before reaching the high 40s, with an afternoon high in the low 50s. While a few scattered clouds are possible, sunshine will dominate throughout the day. Now, let’s talk about the wind because it’s giving serious *SpongeBob pizza delivery* vibes. Winds will start in the low teens in the morning, increasing to the high teens and low 20s by the afternoon. Gusts will range from 20 to 30 mph, with peak gusts reaching around 31 mph in the early afternoon.

Tonight:

As the evening approaches, temperatures will drop into the high 40s to low 50s, eventually settling in the mid to upper 30s overnight. Winds will calm, staying in the 5 to 10 mph range, with occasional gusts of 15 mph. Clouds will move in, leading to an overcast night.

Saturday:

Looks like we have another sunny and breezy day ahead! Morning temperatures will start in the high 30s and warm into the mid to high 40s, reaching an afternoon high in the low 50s. Expect partly cloudy skies throughout the day. Winds will start in the low teens and remain in the 10 to 15 mph range, with peak gusts reaching around 28 mph. Wind speeds and gusts will gradually calm as the evening approaches.

Looking Ahead:

Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend and early next week, it’ll be a great time to get outside! Expect sunny, clear conditions with cooler temperatures, but highs will stay in the mid 50s to low 60s. Winds will be much calmer than we’ve experienced this past week. By midweek, temperatures will warm up, reaching as high as the low 70s!

Discussion:

There’s not much to discuss today, as the weather today and for the next couple of days will be dry, sunny, and relatively calm. This is all thanks to the high-pressure system sitting directly above us. The descending air associated with high-pressure systems prevents cloud formation, resulting in clear weather. This makes the upcoming weekend a perfect time to step outside (maybe starting Sunday, when the winds calm down!)

Via wpc.ncep.noaa.gov

The cold front associated with the low-pressure system that brought us midweek rain has now moved offshore, bringing cooler temperatures for the weekend. Cold fronts are the leading edge of a cooler air mass, and as they move through, they force the warmer air ahead of them to rise. This lifting of warm air can cause clouds to form and, in some cases, lead to precipitation. The passage of the cold front also creates a strong pressure gradient. Just like Frances pointed out in yesterday’s post, this gradient causes air to move quickly from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure, as air naturally flows from regions with more air (high pressure) to regions with less air (low pressure) in an attempt to balance out the pressure difference. This movement of air is what we feel as wind. The greater the pressure difference (the stronger the pressure gradient), the stronger the wind. These gusty winds, like those we’ve been experiencing, will gradually calm down after the cold front passes by early next week.

Stay tuned for updates Terps, and have a great weekend!!
