Evening Update: Potential Snow Flurries Tonight, Very Cold and Windy Tomorrow

Today, cloudy skies and cold temperatures remind us that winter has begun. Winds reached into the mid-teens and temperatures climbed to the mid-40s (peaking just below the 47°F average for this time of year). Colder air coming in tonight has the chance to bring us our first snowflakes of the season.

Through Tonight

An Arctic cold front, with frigid air behind it, will move through tonight. The front could increase the chance of snow in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, which would happen late in the night (after 10 pm). Any snow here in College Park is unlikely to stick, though overnight cold temperatures could lead to some slippery conditions tomorrow morning. Temperatures will drop below freezing overnight and will continue to fall low as the mid-20s by sunrise.

Overnight, rain/snow showers could coat up to less than an inch of snow in areas around DC/Baltimore areas (via UMD TROWAL)

Tomorrow (Thursday)

The cold temperatures from overnight will struggle to rise above the mid-20s through the day. Winds coming out of the west and northwest will accompany gusts which could potentially exceed 20 mph. So far, Thursday will be one of the coldest days of this winter season. Although there will be sunshine, prepare to dress warmly for tomorrow.
