Morning Update: Mild Temperatures and Sunny Skies to Continue

This week, expect mild temperatures and dry conditions to persist.

Today:

Temperatures start in the upper 40s before reaching a daytime high of 54 degrees by late afternoon. The early evening will see temperatures return to the upper 40s. Expect winds in the 10-15 mph range and sunny skies.

Tonight:

Overnight, temperatures drop to the upper 30s. Clear skies should continue into the evening, with winds becoming light and variable.

Tomorrow (Wednesday):

Morning temperatures tomorrow start out in the lower 30s, which is rather chilly compared to what we have been experiencing for the past week. Be sure to grab your jacket before leaving for classes! Afternoon temperatures will once again be in the mid-50s before dropping into the upper 40s. Sunny skies and light and variable winds are expected to persist.

Looking Ahead:

Temperatures gradually warm-up towards the end of the week, eventually hitting the mid-70s as we head into the weekend. Despite some passing clouds on Thursday, expect sunny skies for the remainder of the week.

Discussion:

The mild temperatures this week are thanks to a cold front that swept through the region last night. After the front moved through the area, it brought with it the breezy conditions we will experience today. A high pressure zone will also start to build. This will continue to build throughout the day Wednesday, and helps to reinforce cooler temperatures. Eventually, the high pressure system will leave our area towards the end of the week, allowing for warm air advection out of the south on Friday (which explains why temperatures return to the 70s by the end of the week).

Within the map above displaying tonight’s temperatures at the 700 mb level (the low-to-mid part of the troposphere), the wind barbs show clockwise flow in the eastern U.S. As high pressure systems turn in the clockwise direction, the high pressure system depicted by the blue “H” helps to reinforce the colder air being fed into our region.

That’s all for today. Have a great day, Terps!
