Morning Update: Mild Temperatures to End the Week

Expect a relatively warmer end to your week, with partly cloudy conditions expected Thursday and sunny conditions expected Friday.

Today:

Morning temperatures kick off in the lower 30s and gradually increase for a high temperature in the lower 40s by the afternoon. After this, temperatures will return to the mid-to-lower 30s as the evening progresses. Expect winds in the 10 to 15 mph range and partly cloudy skies.

Tonight:

Overnight temperatures will be in the upper 20s. Winds will be in the 5 to 10 mph range.

Tomorrow (Friday):

Temperatures in the morning will start off chilly, with temperatures in the lower 20s. Despite this chilly start, temperatures will increase into the upper 30s come afternoon. Evening temperatures will lower into the low 30s. Expect winds in the 5 to 10 mph range and sunny skies!

Looking Ahead:

Weekend temperatures will thankfully continue to follow the gradual warming trend that we have been seeing throughout the week so far. Valentine’s Day will feature a high temperature in the lower 50s, while Sunday will see a high temperature in the mid-40s. While Saturday is expected to be sunny, the clouds will return on Sunday with the potential for some showers towards the end of the day. Winds will be light and variable throughout the weekend.

Discussion:

After a recently frigid trend in winter weather, our area, and much of the Eastern U.S., to experience milder weather. A large ridge is building in the eastern portion of the U.S., which is helping to enforce warmer air in our area.

Height anomaly maps, like the one above, help to determine pressure level heights in the middle of the troposphere, which are linked to temperature. Orange and yellow coloring indicates higher pressure heights and warmer temperatures, while purple and blue coloring indicates lower pressure heights and colder temperatures. Our area is colored in orange Saturday afternoon, which is when we are expecting temperatures in the lower 50s (which is definitely warmer than what we have been used to!).

That’s all for today. Have a great day, Terps!
