MORNING UPDATE: A Chilly Monday, and a Cold and Wet Tuesday to Start the Week

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break, Terps! Be prepared for a sunny and chilly Monday before some wintry mix and rain on Tuesday. Be sure to check Tuesday’s commute conditions and be safe getting to campus.

Today:

Monday brings a chilly and pleasant start to the week. Temperatures at sunrise start in the low 30s and gradually rise to a high temperature in the mid-40s in the late afternoon. Expect calm breezes, chilly temperatures, and clear skies throughout the day.

Tonight:

Temperatures drop into the 30s in the evening and into the late night. Sleet and possibly some snow will begin to fall after midnight.

Tomorrow (Tuesday):

Expect a cold, wet, and gloomy Tuesday. The wintry mix from overnight is expected to turn to rain as the sun rises, and steady rainfall is expected throughout the day. Daytime air temperatures remain in the mid to upper 30s. Be sure to stay dry and warm, as wet conditions could make these temperatures feel colder. The rain is expected to die down in the evening and should be out of the way by night.

Looking Ahead:

After a rainy Tuesday, the weather is expected to clear up and follow a relatively consistent pattern until the end of the workweek. For the rest of the week, expect daytime temperatures in the 40s and nighttime temperatures in the 20s.

Discussion:

The main event of the week will be the wintry mix/rain that our area will see this Tuesday. A strong, low-pressure system alongside a big band of moisture from the southwest will provide the conditions necessary for the rain we’ll see on Tuesday.

Nighttime temperatures and cold-air conditions will get nighttime temperatures low enough to bring some of the more icy precipitation as this system passes, but, as the sun rises and temperatures warm, this wintry mix will turn into rain.

This combination of wintry mix, cold temperatures, and rain could pose some issues for anyone planning to commute to campus today. Make sure to take care on the roads as the wintry mix could lead to some slippery conditions on the roads. Additionally, with the cold temperatures and wet conditions, be sure to stay dry and bundle up to stay warm.

That’s all for the early week. Good luck with this final stretch of classes, Terps!
