Morning Update: Pleasant Weather on the Way for Move-in Week!

Hi, Terps! We hope everyone is looking forward to coming to campus in the coming week. Thankfully, we have some nice weather ahead (i.e., not muggy and hot), so for those of you who are moving in this week, be sure to take advantage of the nice weather!

Today:

Look forward to sunny skies and enjoyable summer weather today! Morning temperatures remain in the mid to upper 70s before rising to a high in the lower 80s in the afternoon. Expect a gentle breeze from the northwest until sunset. Additionally, lower humidity values are expected today, so the air will feel more pleasant compared to what we have been experiencing. Some brief passing clouds are possible, as well, but expect skies to remain sunny. Today would be a great day to get outside and soak up some sun. If you plan to be outside, don’t forget to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated!

Tonight:

Temperatures at sundown fall from the upper 70s to the upper 60s by midnight and the early morning. The air should feel relatively pleasant and comfortable, as humidity is expected to be lower. Expect a light breeze throughout most of the night.

Tuesday:

Expect some nicer weather on Tuesday! Morning temperatures start in the mid to low 70s before reaching a high in the upper 70s. Expect a gentle breeze to persist throughout the day. The air is expected to be less humid and fairly dry, and skies are expected to be mostly sunny. Today is another great day to be outside!

Looking Ahead:

The coming week is looking to be cooler and drier compared to what we’ve seen this summer. Wednesday is shaping up to be one of the coolest days of the week, with a high in the mid 70s and sunny, and nighttime temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. The rest of the week is looking fairly similar, with highs in the upper 70s and nighttime lows in the low to mid 60s. Dewpoints remain low, so expect the air to be less humid and much more comfortable than the muggy weather we’ve been experiencing this summer. This is the best week to get outside, so be sure to take advantage of the nice weather!

Discussion:

There’s a low-pressure and high-pressure setup this morning that will help move cold from the northwest into the Midwest, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. As this setup moves eastward, the high pressure will roll in and help keep the dry and cool air sinking, which is why we’ll see the cooler temperatures and nicer weather this week. Very cool!

As a quick recap from our previous discussions over the last few months, high-pressure systems are typically associated with sunny weather and sinking air. So, as this system rolls through, a bunch of air is sinking. Additionally, this incoming system isn’t carrying the typical humid air we’ve been seeing (most of the humidity that we’re all pretty familiar with comes up from the Gulf), since it’s from the north (and air from the north tends to be pretty dry!). So, without too much thermodynamics talk, we have a bunch of sinking, cool, and dry air passing through. This is why we’re seeing much more pleasant weather this week.

Going into our first week of classes, expect to see these temperatures stick around. They won’t be muggy temperatures in the 90s, but expect to feel normal summer weather in the low to mid 80s during our first week of classes. It’s a little too far out to predict the exact kinds of weather we’ll be seeing, but we will keep you updated as we approach the next week.

For now, enjoy the weather and our last days of summer!
