Morning Update: It’s Just Hot

Welcome back, Terps (and our other readers)! We’re back to give you some weather updates. While we will focus on the College Park forecast, we’ll also try our best to make some considerations for the larger DMV area, as well.

Today:

Heat advisory for the DMV extended area (portions of central, north central, northeast, northern, and southern Maryland, and central and northern Virginia)  from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Air temperatures are anticipated to heat up and to sit around the mid 90s by noon, and will reach into the upper 90s in the late afternoon. Alongside the high temperature, also expect some generally humid conditions. Some breezes start up around noon and last until sundown. With these conditions, expect heat indexes in the 100 to 105-degree range. Expect to be in the sun for most of today with a few scattered clouds here and there. No storms or significant rain is expected for the daytime. Overall, be ready for hot and humid weather.

Tonight:

Temperatures stay relatively hot and the air remains humid until midnight. Air temperatures are expected in the 80s, but coupled with the humidity, the air will likely feel more like the lower 90s. The air remains relatively still as breezes die down at sunset. In summary, nighttime conditions stay relatively hot and muggy.

Thursday:

Expect another hot day with a considerable chance for some rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon, so make sure to consider the weather if you have any outdoor plans. Current forecasts do not anticipate any super crazy or severe storms (like the ones we’ve seen this summer), but still be prepared for thunderstorms and rain to continue into the nighttime. Otherwise, air temperatures in the low 90s and humid conditions are expected, so expect the air to feel in the upper 90s and lower 100s during the daytime and into the mid 80s after sunset. As we approach Thursday, be sure to keep an eye on the forecast in case conditions change.

Looking Ahead:

A cool turn in the weather on Friday is expected (it will be cooler than we’ve been seeing. See what we did there?)! The cold front that is anticipated to bring the storms on Thursday is expected to linger around our area and bring mild temperatures in the low to mid 70s and fairly humid conditions. Expect rain and clouds throughout the day and a chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon until sunset. Temperatures drop into the mid to upper 70s and remain humid during the night, so if you want to experience a small break in the heat, be sure to stick your head outside on Friday night.
