Morning Update: Anticipating April Showers…

Today:

Expect a beautiful, warm, clear spring day! The high temperature will hover around 74 degrees F in College Park, which is about 10 above normal high temperatures for our area this time of year. The warm and clear weather can be attributed to the large high pressure system to our South/Southeast, as high pressure inhibits rising motion (and subsequently clouds and precipitation), and the clockwise flow around this high is bringing warm air up from the Gulf of Mexico and Southeastern US.

The red line highlights the 1020 millibar sea level pressure contour; this gives an idea as to the extent of our aforementioned high pressure system. The blue arrow indicates the direction of the flow around our high pressure system (i.e., clockwise), bringing warm air up from the Gulf of Mexico and Southeast US. Tonight:

There is a slight chance for drizzles overnight, mostly after 2 a.m. Nothing to worry about into the daylight hours tomorrow! The low temperature will be around 52 F.

Tomorrow (Wednesday):

The weather tomorrow will be very similar to today’s weather. Again, we can expect a high temperature around 74 degrees F, albeit with a little more cloud cover.  This could be attributed to the moist air that has been streaming into our region from the high pressure system to our South. By tomorrow evening, this high pressure will have eroded. Following the retreat of the high pressure system, we can expect a change in the weather patterns for the rest of the week.

A Look Ahead:

As hinted in the title, beginning Thursday night, the chances for some April showers start looking good. In fact, after Thursday night we can expect lower temperatures each day through the weekend accompanied with a chance of rain. Twenty four-hour accumulated precipitation from the GEFS (an ensemble global numerical weather prediction model) begins increasing in our area Thursday evening through at least Sunday where it reaches a maximum for our near future. Make sure you begin packing an umbrella for your commute starting Thursday – April has arrived!
