Morning Update: Wintry Weather Week

Today:

While you may have experienced some sleet or freezing rain this morning, by now it has likely stopped or turned to rain. There’s a good chance if you live near campus that you have not and will not see any precipitation today. Temperatures will be considerably warmer than yesterday, with a high of 50 F, but that’s the last of the “warm” weather you can expect this week. Expect cloudy skies and mostly calm wind for the rest of the day.

Tonight:

The skies will remain mostly cloudy, and the warmth from the day will not linger long. With a low of 27 degrees F, College Park will be just under our average low temperature for this time of year. We won’t get any snow tonight, so try to stay warm and dream of the snow to come!

Tomorrow (Wednesday):

Tomorrow will start off cloudy and cold. Eventually, we will reach a high of 37 F by the mid-to-late afternoon. After 1 p.m., the chance of some rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow begins to increase. This wintry weather will likely start as rain given the surface temperature, but we may expect a relatively small snowfall accumulation overnight.

The College Park area has approximately a 60% chance of 1 or more inches of snowfall accumulating between 1 p.m. Wednesday (2/10) and 1 p.m. Thursday (2/11). Image courtesy of WPC.

A Look Ahead:

The snow on Wednesday may continue through Thursday and into the early morning on Friday, but temperatures may rise enough above freezing (i.e., around 34 F) to cause some messy melting on Thursday.  Despite this extended wintry weather event, we still expect more to come on the weekend! Saturday night is looking favorable for some more snow, but with a 50% chance of precipitation, it is not clear what to expect. This week, it seems mother nature is making up for the mild and (almost) snowless winter from last year!
