We have a pretty wild case of weather whiplash ahead with mild temperatures expected again today before rain quickly changes to snow tonight and continues, possibly heavily, into tomorrow morning before ending. After that, cold should start and end next week although we could see some more briefly mild weather in the middle. Oh, and there’s another snow chance late next week.
Today: Overall not bad, as we should see plenty of sun early in the day along with light winds. Coming off of morning temperatures in the upper 20s, we should see our highs rise nicely into the upper 40s or near 50. Winds will be light from the southwest. Clouds may gradually increase later.
Tonight: Cloudy skies in the evening. Rain or a rain/snow mix begins shortly after midnight before precipitation should change to all snow a few hours later. Depending on where the heaviest precipitation is and how quickly temperatures fall, this could be a significant snowfall or essentially a non-event. I’m leaning in the middle. But for now, temperatures are expected to drop into low to mid 30s overnight with light winds.
National Weather Service forecast snowfall for DMV Saturday night into Sunday, as of Friday afternoon. Changes possible.
Tomorrow: Moderate or heavy snow will continue through the morning hours (potentially mixing with a little rain later) before ending by the Super Bowl. Accumulations generally between 2 and 4 inches, although the National Weather Service suggests there is a possibility of higher amounts if the heaviest snow sets up right over us. Temperatures are mainly in the low 30s through midday before rising to nearer 40 later on. Cloudy skies should persist through the day.
Tomorrow night: Super bowl plans should be just fine as roads are mainly expected to be wet. However, with clear skies and a cold air mass, temperatures will be quite cold, in the teens. At least winds should remain rather light from the northwest.
A look ahead: Next week will generally feel like February with mostly cold temperatures, starting with highs only in the low 30s Monday. There’s a small chance of some light rain on Tuesday as temperatures rise a little higher into the lower 40s before another Arctic surge moves in Wednesday through next weekend. Highs should mostly be in the 30s (although it could be much colder next weekend). Another storm may approach between Wednesday night and Saturday which, depending on the track, could bring rain, freezing rain, or more snow. Only time will tell.
