Evening Update: Wet Saturday Turns to Warm Windy Sunday

Today was a grey, but near average temperatures kept the day from being too bad. It stayed dry for the final day of the spring job and internship fair, allowing the students one less thing to worry about today. Tomorrow rain will return, ending on Sunday morning. Sunday will bring much warmer temperatures and much windier conditions.

Tonight:

Skies will remain mostly cloudy to overcast as a warm front approaches us. Temperatures will fall into the low to mid 30s. Northeast winds will be calm shifting form the east.

Tomorrow:

Slight chance of showers in the morning will becoming more likely in the afternoon to almost a certainty. Highs will be in the low to mid 40s. Winds will be from the east at 5 to 8 mph. Rain intensity will increase in the evening accumulating 0.5 to 0.75 inches. East winds will calm and shift to from the south. Temperatures will only fall to around 40 as warmer southerly air begins to enter the area.

Sunday:

This image from the Weather Prediction Center shows the incoming system that will bring steady rain on Saturday and windy and warm conditions on Sunday. This prediction shows the system at around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. The warm front is very close to the metro DC area. As it passes Sunday, it will bring significantly warmer temperatures, but a cold front immediately behind the warm front will bring windy and colder conditions in the evening and into Monday.

This image from Tropical Tidbits shows the fv3-GFS model showing the 2 meter temperatures. At around noon on Sunday the model predicts that the metro DC area will be in the mid 60s. That would be about 15 degrees above average for this time of year.

Rain will start Sunday, but gradually lessen throughout the morning becoming partly sunny by the afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 60s as strong southerly winds develop at 9 to 14 mph shifting to westerly winds at 15 to 20 mph by mid-afternoon due to the immediate cold front approaching us.  Winds gusts could be over 40 mph. Skies will also become mostly clear by evening. Lows will fall drastically due to the passing cold front to the mid 30s.

A Look Ahead:

Monday will remain mostly clear and windy with highs in the upper 40s. In the evening, the winds will die down, and skies will remain clear as temperatures fall to around 30. Tuesday is looking to be similar to Monday. The next chance of rain is currently on Wednesday night.
